I have a great affection for Berlin because my first film played here and so as a film maker film festivals become like a home through your work.
freie Generation Reporter: Wie hast du die Kinderdarsteller gefunden? How did you find the kids actors?
R: Meine Frau ist ein Casting Director sie castet alle meine Filme. Ed Oxenbould kenne ich schon lange, ich habe mal mit seinen Eltern gearbeitet. Wir haben uns viele Kinder angeguckt, in einem solchen Film ist es wichtig gute Kinder zu haben.
Actually, my wife who I was talking to, Jane Norris is a casting director and she casts all of my films and we audition the kids. Ed Oxenbould I’ve known for a long time. I worked with his parents before. We looked at a lot of kids actually, in a film like this it was really important to have great children.

fGR: Was hast du von Ed und Julien gehalten, als du sie das erste Mal gesehen hast? What did you think of Ed and Julien when you first saw them?

Amazing! Their dynamic together on film is wonderful. They are funny, they are improvising and, you know, I am so happy to found the two of them cause it is not just the individual actors. You have to cast that they have a dynamic, between them which is fine. So there dynamic is really really great. (laughs)

Ich denke dass ist es, eine Athmosphäre zu schaffen, die lustig und spielerisch ist, aber trotzdem diszipliniert, damit man viel Arbeit schafft.

fGR: Welche Reaktion hast du dir vom Puplikum gewünscht? What reaction you wished from the audience?
R: Ich hoffe es bringt Leute zum Lachen und Weinen. Der Film hat Trauer und Freude und ich liebe es ins Kino zu gehen und Emotionen zu fühlen. Für mich ist es am schlimmsten wenn ich ins Kino gehe und nichts fühle. Letztendlich möchte ich Freude haben.
Look, I think it's emotionally … I hope it would make people laugh and cry. You know it got sad and happiness and for me I love go in the cinema and feeling emotions. The worst is for me going in the cinema and feel nothing. I want it to have joy, ultimately joy.

It was a really great experience. It’s really great to film with kids, because you’re all the same age and you understand what you are going through, kind of in the same school group. It is really interesting, it is much more interesting than working with adults obviously though. They graduated school and they’ve done a lot more, it’s kind of cool to share experience with young people.

fGR: Wie war es mit Sam Worthington zu derhen? How was shooting with Sam Worthington?
Ed: Oh,es war lustig und wirklich toll. Es ist schön mit ihm zusammen zu arbeiten. Er hat mir viel über improvisieren und sich Zeilen ausdenken erzählt. Es war eine wirklich coole Lernerfahrung.

fGR: Warum? Was liebt ihr am schauspielen? Why? What are the things you love about it?
Julien: Einfach neue Leute kennen zu lernen und in Städte wie diese zu kommen. Gut zu schauspielen und eine Karriere daraus zu machen. Est ist etwas schönes. Just getting to know other people and coming to great cities like this. And getting to do great acting job and getting a career out of it. It is a great thing.
